Metano Logistics
RFID TRACKING
Metano Limited are an intermediate bulk container (IBC) rental company. They approached us to develop a bespoke radio frequency identification (RFID) system. The purpose of this system is to automate the tracking of IBC's that are on hire to customers. The system is to detect RFID tag movements and determine their direction of travel. This data is to be used to determine wether the tags are arriving or leaving any particular location. The system will then be able to update a web based interface to reflect current tag locations.
Purpose
There is a current system in place that enables users of it to track IBC's as they travel around the physical system. At the moment this means that when IBC's arrive at any location, somebody must physically check the ID numbers of the containers and mark them as having arrived in a web interface. The new system is intended to automate the movement tracking. An IBC arrives at a given location and its RFID tag is detected by an RFID reciever. The direction of travel is determined as incomming and a web based interface is updated to indicate that the IBC has arrived. Simillarly when the container is leaving the premisses its tag is recieved and its direction of travel is determined as outgoing. The interface is then updated to reflect the change.
Status
Currently the system is in the initial test stage. A bare bones version of the system has been developed as a test bed. This software is being used to test the viability of the system and highlight any potential problems for resolution in the final system.
